Job summary

The Amazon Devices and Services Design Group (DDG) is a multidisciplinary design team that is responsible for the UX of Fire Tablets, Fire TV, Echo Family Devices, Alexa Mobile and more. DDG’s mission is to bring to life delightful, easy-to-use, and high value experiences for our customers.


We are looking for a UX Director, Interaction Design to shape our interaction design portfolio. This role reports to our Vice President of Design, and works closely with key product leaders across the Devices & Services Organization, and drives design impact across Amazon. You will shape our interaction design practice and influence the development of devices and services.


You will be responsible for managing an interaction design team to create and ship high value elegant and intuitive experiences that engage and delight customers. Your leadership will inspire, empower, and guide the team to create innovative designs, drive the end-to-end customer experience and enable customers to interact and engage in all that Alexa and Amazon offers. Specifically, your guidance will create and shape the information architecture, user experience, interaction and design systems for Echo Show, Fire TV, Fire Tablet, and Alexa Mobile and influence the work of designers, product managers, and engineers across the company. You will inspire the team to think big and explore new ideas, invent and simplify to turn design concepts into globally scalable solutions, insist on the highest standards for interaction and visual design patterns, hire and develop the best talent in the industry, and build trusted partnerships with a variety of product and engineering teams. You will work to identify, define, and teach best practices within the organization and the broader design community to unify design processes, foster innovation and improve efficiency throughout the product development lifecycle.



Key job responsibilities

* Manage the interaction design team that creates and shapes the information architecture, user experience, interaction, and design systems for Echo Show, Fire TV, Fire Tablet, Alexa Mobile, and more.

* Inspire, empower, and guide the interaction design team to create innovative designs and drive the end-to-end customer experiences by working within DDG (Research, Expressions, UX Program Management, and Futures) and Product and Engineering partners.

* Elevate the craft of design and be the advocate for our customers through the work produced by the interaction design team.

* Lead teams to think big and explore new ideas through design sprints, workshops, annual planning cycles, and more.

* Invent and simplify to turn design concepts into globally scalable solutions by owning the Design Systems that include components, interaction patterns, HIGs, and tools for internal and external experience makers to use.

* Insist on the highest standards for GUI, VUI, alternative input methods, and visual design patterns implemented in all products produced by DDG through design critiques, bug bashes, customer experience bar raising reviews, product team reviews, executive reviews, and more.

* Establish trust and build confidence with cross-functional partners and executive leadership that designs are bar raising with rigorous validation from customer inputs.

* Identify, define, and share best practices within the organization and the broader design community to unify design processes, foster innovation and improve efficiency throughout the product development lifecycle.

* Contribute to writing business docs such as design briefs, product experience docs, annual planning docs, 3 year plans, and more.

* Hire and develop the best talent in the industry.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* Demonstrated results experience in interaction design (information architecture, design systems, consumer electronics, mobile, web, and other media), with an emphasis on conceptual, visual, HW/SW interaction design and strategic thinking.

* A portfolio of work demonstrating experience creating great user-centered design solutions across consumer electronics, including embedded systems (TV, mobile, wearables, etc.).

* Have an understanding of the complexity of product development and new product incubation.

* Experience developing, documenting, and implementing full-stack design systems and object models.

* Experience leading design teams through several full product development cycles (from design strategy through execution and market introduction); successful experience as Design Director, Executive Creative Director, Art Director or equivalent role.

* Demonstrated mentorship, success growing and developing people and foster a design culture that enables world-class creative development

* Proven experience with rapid, iterative design, testing, and development processes

* Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and all levels of an organization (from designers to senior executive management)

* Demonstrated experience synthesizing large, strategic & challenging business, technology and customers’ needs into actionable plans with demonstrated impact.

* Understand the array of technical constraints, user goals and business requirements that shape a product.

* Fluency in best practices for multi-platform information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques

* Demonstrate ability to work confidently with Program Management, Development, Product Planning, Brand, Marketing and Usability.

* Be willing to roll up the sleeves to meet business and product deliverables

* Expert skill level with standard design tools such as Photoshop, Sketch, Figma, In Design

* A minimum of a BA/BS degree in a Design related field such as Interface Design, Interaction Design, HCI, Communication Design, Architecture, etc or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Able to deconstruct product and cross-product interfaces from a system-wide view into meaningful and useful component parts, and demonstrate the significance of each part’s relationship to the other parts, and to the system as a whole

* Facility for uncovering root causes of design factors limiting customer success in achieving critical outcomes

* Experience creatively solving hard problems across complex products with simple yet transformational results.

* Training or knowledge in Cognitive Psychology or Human Factors

* Experience with variety of emerging interface types, e.g., voice, AR/VR, gesture-based systems

* Experience designing for ML systems

* Possess strong resource and planning skills including the ability to staff and manage design team against high-level roadmaps, projects, and priorities

* Strong bias for action including the ability to juggle multiple priorities and effectively deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

* Demonstrated results leading integrated physical and digital experience design (HW & SW)

* Recognized globally as a high judgment expert in design or related fields. Brings value to the design industry at large.

* Passion for learning and innovation, balanced with business needs and customer expectations.

* Able to work globally, company-wide, and with industry leaders

* Post-graduate education in design, business or related field or experience.
