Job summary

Amazon Smart Vehicles is a fast growing team with a mission to deliver connected in-cabin experiences that delight customers and help keep them safe on the road. At the heart of our solution are Alexa voice and AI technologies, which enable us to offer voice-forward, proactive experiences to customers in a familiar and intuitive way.

Our team is building voice-forward in-vehicle experiences that delight customers, increase safety, and bring the future of transportation to life. Our mission is to continue pushing the envelope in automatic speech recognition (ASR), natural language understanding (NLU), and Conversational Design (CxD) to provide the best possible end user experience.

We are seeking an innovative, self-motivated and ownership-minded Conversation Designer to be a force-multiplier for our UX Design team, amplify our impact across teams, and drive our vision for a connected in-cabin experience.

Key job responsibilities

As a Senior Conversation Designer, you will lead, define, and drive spoken language and multi-modal interfaces for existing and upcoming vehicle-specific Alexa experiences. You excel at conceptualizing spoken and multi-modal experiences in the abstract, communicating them effectively to the larger team, and driving that vision into logic and dialogs that consider visual components.

As a member of a growing design team, you will also be responsible for helping prioritize the team’s work and magnifying the impact of the team’s output across organizational boundaries.

We are looking for a designer who can:

  • Produce user and logic flows, wireframes, prototypes, and rigorous user interface specifications
  • Confidently defend design rationale used to create solutions in frequent executive-level design reviews
  • Draw on depth of experience, but initiate research and testing efforts as needed
  • Conduct analyses of real usage data to inform Voice UX efforts
  • Drive root cause analyses to respond to Voice UX performance issues
  • Speak authoritatively on spoken interaction design in daily iterations with product managers, engineers, and testers
  • Start simple while not losing sight of the long-term vision
  • Thrive in a nimble, start-up like environment

A day in the life

As a Senior Conversation Designer, you lead the design of dialogs between drivers and Alexa. You are fluent in voice design patterns and have experience curating a great UX that leverages voice, screens, physical controls, and haptics. You leverage experience in the trade to ground

ideas in what's human and meaningful while thinking big towards ambitious ideas for which no patterns exist. You establish collaborative processes with engineering partners to bring ideas to life and translate designs into TTS prompts and NLU actions. You communicate ideas effectively and drive customer obsessed results into technical backlogs and marketing messages.

About the team

The Amazon Smart Vehicles UX team is a multi-disciplinary group of UX designers, researchers and design technologists that envision, create, and execute ideas end-to-end for our customers. We collaborate with internal teams and external partners to design user experiences that balance business requirements, technological solutions and customer needs to deliver the best end-customer experience.
