Amazon Lex is a fully managed AWS AI service that provides customers a platform to build conversational interfaces (‘chatbots’) using both voice and text. Amazon Lex provides the advanced deep learning functionalities of automatic speech recognition (ASR) to convert speech to text, and natural language understanding (NLU) to recognize the intent of the text. This enables customers to build applications with highly engaging user experiences and lifelike conversational interactions. AWS Artificial Intelligence is a niche domain within AWS solving problems on the intersection of large scale distributed systems and machine learning.

As the Software Development Manager of this team, you will lead a team of talented software engineers and will work with a group of Applied scientists to build the next generation of Automated Speech Recognition technology. You will also work with product managers and other stake holders to define team's technical and product road map. You will build a high quality team by coaching existing engineers and hiring top class talent. You will review technical designs and stay on top of operational health of the services owned by your team. You will represent your team in leadership forums and interact with customers to build a better understanding of how the product and features are being used.

This role within AWS AI presents a unique and rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor within a fast growing business and help shape the technology, product and the business. You will be part of the larger technical leadership community that forms the backbone of the AWS AI organization. You will play a critical role in business planning, work closely with senior executives, influence our long-term technical and business strategy, and ultimately enable us to deliver innovative new solutions rapidly.

A successful candidate will bring deep technical and software expertise, strong business acumen and judgment, a capability to build and grow a talented team, desire to have an industry wide impact, and ability to work within a fast moving, startup environment to rapidly deliver services that have a broad business impact. You will practice development management practices such as scrum and make sure your team is productive solving technical challenges in system design, distributed computing, and full-stack services.

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering

· 10+ years of software development experience, and/or at least 2 years of management experience

· Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations


Master's or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science

· 5+ years of relevant software development and/or engineering management experience

· Experience with machine learning, deep learning, data mining, and/or statistical analysis tools

· Familiarity with natural language processing and understanding systems

· Experience with highly distributed, multi-tenant systems
